My A5 Got Instant Smoke

Hello everbody i own a a5 for a year now my last print was yesterday and i want to print new things today so i opened up my printer but i heard beep noise from booting and instant smoke. But my switch was opened and when i connected electricity it smoked.(I always close my switch before plugging in electricty). Now i tried to power and check tft via usb and i only heard beep noise but there is no life on the tft.So i can see damage on the 2 step drivers.(My a5 is upgraded version no cut corners and red button and w series.

    Welcome @Promachine
Oh wow... Ok. This is serious. The first priority is to avoid damaging anything else. Don't plug the printer into a computer just yet. I would suggest unplugging from the wall and checking a few things.

Do you have a multimeter? Check that the ground pin has continuity with the metal printer chassis (touch an exposed metal point on the printer, not the paint)

Check the whole length of the bed cables to make sure there is no damage to them.

Yes i am slightly doing robotics so i have tools.Yes i was get risk to plug the printer to the computer but like 5 hours after accident lcd turned on and displays but there is a issue it dont see the usb stick.(I dont plugged the printer only gived 12 volt from tft panels socket and it worked.I looked for details on the 2 step drivers burnt is going to the chip.)I am going to do the multimeter test tomorrow do you have any advices to like next time if some case that thing happens a protection to boards.
I think all the step drivers damaged because of the powerline i dont know ecaxtly wich step drivers get energy first.
So what do you think about boards they get damaged or else.(Especialy tft screens usb port can be fried i dont know the reason but it can be.
    Thanks for reply.

I checked them and there is no issue with them it can be electricty and for a while i want to upgrade my step drivers so what is your advice on step drivers tmc2130,tmc2208 or a4988 with tl smothers.
  • Samuel PinchesSamuel Pinches Posts: 2,997Administrator
It depends on what you need. I use A4988 with TL smoothers - cheap and easy.
TMC is good for print quality, but it is more complex to install, and you need to add fan cooling for the stepper drivers.
Please see the A5 upgrades page on the jgaurora wiki for more information.

I really don't know what would have cause this smoke without seeing parts in person. Quite concerning!! Please check everything carefully.

I would order a new MKS Gen L motherboard, and new MKS TFT28 touch screen. The motherboard is not too expensive, and you can order it with stepper drivers. I cannot advise on TMC, it is not my area of expertise. Please search the forum and wiki for more discussions on the TMC drivers.

Maybe ask jgaurora for support... is the printer in warranty? It is unfortunate, because the MKS tft is not cheap.

Can you post a photo of your hot bed? Is it 4 wires or 6 wires?
