unable to home the extruder

it would appear that the extruder that came with my Maker does not have a contact sensor to stop its motion across the bar. it smashes up against the stop bar, makes a chatter as the server tries to keep going and then stops with an unable to home error on the screen

Welcome @Midiean -- can you post a photo of the printer? The hotend (x-axis) endstop should be on the right side of the printer, from memory.
