SD Card Files Not Recognized

Hello, I recently completed a lengthy print `8hr print and later was not able to access files on the SC card. The card is valid as the files are seen on another 3D printer and my PC. I recently retried an upgrade to Marlin v 1.1.8 (a repeated try) and still no SD card. During the Marlin update I see in the serial port window "echo: SD card fail " message. Any suggestions how to fix? Also, I've never been able to print via the USB cable even though Cura says printing. How does one confirm that a Marlin update has indeed occurred: thanks
